About us 

Damen Song Cam Shipyard is engineering, building, fitting out, commissioning and delivering ship types of the Damen range. Basic designs and most components are delivered to DSCS by Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. DSCS will complete the detailed design, produce all required production instructions, supplement the remaining components either by her own production or by purchasing /subcontracting and provide project management.

The HSEQ Dept. monitors the processes within the organization in terms of quality, environment and health & safety management in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The department is responsible for the effectiveness of the various management systems and stimulates the process of continuous improvement of the organization.

The role 

To support the implementation of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs with a strong focus on environmental management. This includes the monitoring and control of waste, energy, chemical usage, wastewater treatment, and compliance with applicable environmental and occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations and standards.

Key accountabilities 

As a HSEQ staff, your tasks are the following: 

1. Environmental Management

- Develop and implement environmental protection measures in accordance with company policy and legal requirements.

- Monitor and report on compliance with environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001, national environmental laws).

- Assist in conducting environmental impact assessments and mitigation planning.

- Conduct routine site inspections for environmental compliance.

2. Waste Management

- Oversee segregation, storage, and disposal of solid, hazardous, and domestic waste.

- Maintain inventory and tracking system for waste collection and disposal records.

- Liaise with licensed waste disposal contractors to ensure legal and safe waste removal.

3. Environmental Monitoring

- Monitor air, water, and noise pollution levels in accordance with environmental monitoring plans.

- Prepare reports on environmental indicators and deviations from acceptable thresholds.

- Ensure calibration and maintenance of environmental monitoring equipment.

4. Energy Consumption Monitoring

- Collect and analyze data on electricity, fuel, and water consumption.

- Recommend and promote energy conservation measures.

- Support energy audits and efficiency improvement projects.

5. Wastewater Treatment Monitoring

- Monitor the operation of wastewater treatment plants to ensure compliance with effluent discharge standards.

- Conduct sampling and testing of treated wastewater and record results.

- Ensure maintenance and proper functioning of treatment facilities.

6. Chemical Management

- Maintain chemical inventory and ensure all chemicals are properly labeled, stored, and used according to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

- Monitor chemical usage to ensure it aligns with safety and environmental guidelines.

- Support spill response planning and participate in emergency drills.

7. Regulatory Compliance and Reporting

- Stay updated on local and international OHS and environmental regulations.

- Prepare and submit environmental compliance reports to authorities as required.

- Coordinate with third-party auditors and government agencies during inspections.

8. Training and Awareness

- Conduct environmental awareness and training sessions for staff and contractors.

- Promote good environmental practices in day-to-day operations.

9. General HSE Support

- Assist in incident investigations related to environmental and safety matters.

- Participate in HSE risk assessments and audits.

- Support the overall HSE management system and contribute to continuous improvement.

Skills & experience 

To be successful in this role you bring: 

1. Qualifications and Experience:

- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field.
- At least 2–4 years of experience in an HSE role with an environmental focus.
- Familiarity with local environmental laws and international standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, etc.).
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring instruments and data analysis.

2. Skills and Competencies:

- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Attention to detail and proactive problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication and training skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
