Job Summary:

The Sample Cutter/Spreader/Presser is a multi-functional role responsible for accurately preparing, cutting, and pressing fabrics and sample garments according to technical specifications. The position plays a key part in ensuring sample quality, maintaining fabric integrity, and supporting timely sample development for design, fitting, and client approval.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Fabric Spreading

• Inspect fabric for defects, color shading, or inconsistencies before cutting.
• Spread fabric manually or with semi-automatic spreaders according to lay plan.
• Ensure correct alignment, tension, and layering for different fabric types (woven, knit, denim, etc.).
• Mark fabric flaws and ensure proper documentation of usage and wastage.

2. Fabric and Garment Cutting

• Cut fabric using hand shears or cutting machines (straight knife, band knife, rotary cutter) as per pattern specifications.
• Ensure all pattern pieces are cut precisely and labeled correctly for identification.
• Follow marker plans and ensure minimal fabric waste.
• Coordinate with pattern makers and sample sewers regarding special cutting instructions.

3. Garment Pressing / Finishing

• Press and steam sample garments after sewing to ensure proper shape, appearance, and measurement accuracy.
• Use pressing tools such as steam irons, vacuum tables, sleeve boards, and hand steamers.
• Finish garments for presentations, fittings, or customer display—ensuring a clean, wrinkle-free appearance.
• Maintain correct temperature, pressure, and timing settings for various fabrics.

4. Maintenance and Safety

• Keep cutting and pressing equipment in good working condition.
• Follow safety procedures during machine operation and use of steam/heat.
• Report maintenance issues immediately to supervisors or technicians.

5. Coordination & Housekeeping

• Organize and tag cut bundles for sewing team.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the sample cutting and pressing areas.
• Support the sample team with additional tasks during peak workloads if needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Education:

o High school diploma or vocational training in apparel, tailoring, or garment technology preferred.

• Experience:

o At least 2 years of experience in a garment sample room or fashion manufacturing environment in any of the listed roles.

• Skills:

o Familiarity with fabric handling, cutting tools, and pressing equipment.

o Ability to read patterns, markers, and tech packs.

o Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and handling of delicate or high-value fabrics.

o Knowledge of garment construction and fabric behavior (shrinkage, stretch, press response).

• Physical Requirements:

o Ability to stand for long periods.

o Lift fabric rolls (up to 25 kg) and operate heavy-duty pressing equipment.

o Good hand-eye coordination.
